Community garden brings neighbours together

Volunteers from across the Circuit have transformed an unused corner of Newham into a welcoming garden for everyone.

What began as an idea over a cup of tea has grown into a thriving community garden that is already making a real difference in the lives of local people.

The project, led by members of three of our churches, has turned a neglected plot behind a church hall into a colourful space where neighbours can meet, learn and support one another.

A shared vision

Last summer, representatives from our six churches came together to discuss how we could better serve our local communities. The idea of a shared garden emerged as a practical way to bring people together and care for God's creation at the same time.

"We wanted a space that would be open to everyone," says our Circuit Minister. "A place where people could grow food, make friends and feel that they belong."

With funding from the Methodist Church's Community Fund and generous donations from local businesses, work began in September.

Growing more than plants

Since opening in April, the garden has become a hub of activity.

Children from the local primary school help plant vegetables, older residents share gardening tips and volunteers meet every Saturday morning to tend the beds and enjoy a chat over tea.

The produce grown so far, including lettuce, tomatoes, herbs and courgettes, is shared among volunteers and donated to a local foodbank.

"It's about more than growing food," says one of the volunteers. "It's about growing community."

Everyone is welcome to get involved, whether you have green fingers or are just curious to see what we're up to.
